Who knows why I do the crazy things I do. Ive no idea whether Shtora gets around that or not, but judging by the fact they dont seem to fit it on later model tanks, or even the T72B3 upgrade, presumably they dont have a lot of confidence in it anymore either. So the US Army reportedly modified their Tow missiles and it no longer worked. I remember some 30 years ago, the Iraqi army was welding dazzlers to the side of their T72M1's to deflect tow. Which admitedly was only seemingly a partial penetration, but it did beg the question why Shtora didnt deflect it. I remember one video where there was a seemingly clean hit on the turret with TOW. So naturally damaged Shtora can't defend against TOW anymore. It's quite likely that Shtora is susciptable to damage like nearby explosions or spray autocannon/machine gun fire.

But I also have some rough memory of destroyed Shtora tanks, destroyed maybe due to missile impact. The fighting inside Syria was in full swing around 4 to 5 years ago so memory is fuzzy but I think a video was posted of a TOW missle heading towards one of the few Shtora using tanks and the TOW missile went off course and missed the tank. Do active protection systems protect against top down attack missiles? If there are examples of it that I have just never heard of, why aren't there HEAPS of examples?Ĥ.

But I have never heard of this actually happening in real combat. I also heard that you can defend against wire guided missiles like the TOW by simple engaging the crew who are guiding the missile. How on earth are ATGMs able to be so effective against tanks when all we should be seeing is a missile launch followed by the tank releasing smoke grenades and then engaging the enemy ATGM team.ģ. Like an advantage that the Russian T-90 had over western tanks - although maybe it is just the people I have spoken to who are misinformed.Ģ. Isn't this what the Russian Shtora system does? And if so, why does it seem like Shtora was considered unique. I heard later on that this type of system is common to a lot of moderns tanks as well. He mentioned that if the LAV was targeted by a laser guided missile it could automatically deploy smoke grenades and turn the turret to face the direction of where the laser was coming from ready for the crew to engage. One of the Army medics nearby who seemed really impressed with the vehicle was telling us all the fancy stuff it could do. So I remember getting a tour around a LAV.
